A brush with tradition: Calligraphers share New Year blessings with travelers

As the Spring Festival travel rush began on January 14, a campaign was launched at Nanjing South Station to send posters bearing the Chinese character "Fu"(meaning "good fortune”) written by over 1,000 calligraphers to tens of thousands of homes.

The Jiangsu Province Calligraphers Association has organized this annual event for eight years. Sun Xiaoyun, chairwoman of the China Calligraphers Association and the provincial association, stated that Chinese calligraphy, an art form recognized as an intangible cultural heritage, serves as a perfect medium to convey best wishes to families through the extensive railway network.

At the opening ceremony, Nanjing South Station was filled with a festive atmosphere. While waiting for his train, young German passenger Luka learned about the Lunar New Year and the "Fu" character from his Chinese colleagues. He was pleased to receive a calligraphy work from a calligrapher, saying that it was a wonderful experience to participate in this unique cultural activity.

Over 1,000 calligraphers will participate in the event across 59 venues in the province’s 13 major cities.
